Caving

The Red Rose Cave & Pothole Club was formed in 1946 and was based around the town of Lancaster in the North of England. Since then it has become one of the country's leading caving clubs with a growing membership of nearly 200 living all over Britain, as well as a number of overseas members.

Membership is open to anyone over 16 provided they are proposed and seconded by Club members. Prospective members are always welcome at Bull Pot Farm. Why not pop in at the Farm one weekend to meet us. For further information on membership see the 'How to Join' link or contact the secretary.

The RRCPC holds regular caving meets at weekends and organises expeditions to other caving regions in Britain and abroad. In the summer of 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002, for example the Club went caving in Sardinia, Spain, the French Pyrennees, China and Crete respectively. As well as the normal club meets there is a wide cross section of members interested in all aspects of caving.

Most of our activities are based around Bull Pot Farm near Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria. This remote farmhouse, located high on Casterton Fell at High Casterton, acts as the Club's headquarters and members are present most weekends. The Farm is available for booking by visiting groups or clubs. More detail on the club website.

Local Walks

Casterton Fellfoot

Andy Goldsworthy's Sheepfolds Walk
One of the most unusual and ambitious art installations in the world is Andy Goldsworthy's Sheepfolds Project.

The internationally renowned artist has created 46 natural stone sculptures using the traditional Cumbrian sheep shelter as his inspiration, all of which can be discovered along a trail from Longtown in the north right down to Kirkby Lonsdale.

Part-funded by the Cumbria Council and taking seven years to complete, the project found Goldsworthy working with existing dilapidated sheepfolds made of locally quarried stone, while also building towering conical creations from scratch.
Start and end at the Pheasant Inn in Casterton for a four-mile walk taking around 90 minutes.
